Comprehensive Financial Planning
While most financial advisors focus strictly on managing investments, all of the following fee-only financial advisors are also fee-only financial planners. Fee-only financial planners focus on providing comprehensive financial planning and are upheld to a fiduciary standard. Comprehensive financial planning often includes retirement planning, tax planning, estate planning, insurance analysis, risk management, debt management, and investment management.
Expertise
Many of the advisors hold certifications and designations that reflect experience providing specific services. Certifications can include Certified Financial Professional (CFP®), Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®), and others. Some advisors also maintain tax designations including Certified Public Account (CPA), Enrolled Agent (EA), and Personal Financial Specialist (PFS).
Flat Fee
Fee-only financial advisors who provide their service for a flat fee are also known as flat fee financial advisors or flat fee financial planners. A flat fee provides transparency and directly reflects the work being done and the experience of the advisors. It also doesn't increase when you contribute to your retirement plan or your portfolio grows in value. Flat fees can be monthly, quarterly, hourly, by project, or retainer. These fees can be a set price or based on complexity. All fees should be explained before engagement.
